Grant proposal

Summary:

I am eager to participate in the Art of Coaching workshop to grow my skills as a transformational literacy coach. As a relatively new coach, I want to move beyond simply addressing teaching behaviors and dig deeper to create meaningful, equitable change. This workshop appeals to me because it takes a holistic approach to coaching that explores beliefs, ways of being, and emotions that shape teaching practices. The focus on blended learning allows me to build knowledge and implement new skills while accommodating my busy schedule. I am particularly excited to learn research-based strategies for sustaining changes in teacher practice through transformational coaching. My goal is to facilitate lasting improvements in literacy instruction at my school. This requires going below the surface to address mindsets, biases, and emotional barriers that can unconsciously undermine change efforts. The Art of Coaching provides the tools I need to have insightful coaching conversations that lead to real transformation. I will apply these techniques immediately in my work, empowering teachers to provide equitable, student-centered literacy learning. This workshop aligns perfectly with my vision for taking our school’s literacy coaching to the next level. Thank you for considering my application.

GRANT DETAILS

Educational Issue:

This professional development project will focus on transformational coaching strategies that I can use to improve reading and writing instruction in our district. The Art of Coaching workshop directly aligns with the district goal of providing equitable access to quality literacy education. The Common Core emphasizes developing students’ critical thinking, collaborative discussion, and communication skills across subjects. Transformational coaching allows coaches to collaborate with teachers to shift instructional practices and beliefs to achieve these student outcomes better. This project will provide me with concrete tools for having coaching conversations that unpack biases, barriers, and blind spots that can unconsciously prevent the type of student-centered instruction required by the Common Core.

Goals & Outcomes:

My goal for this professional development is to develop skills as a transformational literacy coach who can lead equitable, insightful conversations that create lasting changes in instructional practices. This workshop will equip me with practical strategies for coaching through an equity lens in a way that addresses the whole teacher, including beliefs, biases, and emotions that may unconsciously impact teaching. These new coaching skills will allow me to partner more effectively with teachers to shift literacy instruction to be more student-centered, personalized, and engaging. This will directly benefit the students I serve by improving the quality of daily literacy teaching tailored to their unique needs and assets.

Activities:

The Art of Coaching workshop includes rich content and activities to help me grow as a transformational literacy coach focused on equity: -4 hours of interactive online modules where I will build foundational knowledge about the principles and practices of transformational coaching. This self-paced learning allows flexibility. A 1 hour of self-reflection to synthesize online learnings and prepare for the live virtual workshop session. – Intensive virtual sessions to process key concepts, observe coaching demonstrations, engage in coaching roleplay activities, and receive expert feedback. This will sharpen my skills. – Post-workshop monthly virtual sessions to continue expanding my coaching toolkit through practice, demonstrations, and applying new techniques. Key content I will learn includes: -The power of transformational coaching to build resilience and interrupt inequities. -Strategies and tools to facilitate insightful coaching conversations. -Assessing my strengths and growth areas as a coach/leader. -Improving my coaching abilities through scaffolded practice and feedback. This blend of self-paced and live learning, ongoing practice, and expert support provides an in-depth professional development experience.

IMPACT

Timeline:

My proposed timeframe for this professional development project is:

  • May 15 – June 10: Self-paced online learning modules (estimated 4-6 hours)
  • June 1: Begin reading “The Art of Coaching” book
  • June 10: Self-reflection to synthesize learnings (1 hour)
  • June 12: Live 4-hour virtual coaching workshop session #1
  • June 13: Live 4-hour virtual coaching workshop session #2
  • June 18: Bonus live virtual coaching workshop session
  • June – December: Ongoing monthly coaching practice sessions (Transformational Coaching Accelerators)
This schedule allows me to build foundational knowledge through independent online learning and reading in May and early June. I will then be prepared to actively participate in the intensive virtual coaching workshop sessions June 12-13, with the bonus session providing additional practice.

Evaluation:

To demonstrate meeting my goals, I will: -Complete a self-assessment of my coaching skills before and after the workshop using the Transformational Coaching Competencies Inventory provided. This will measure growth across coaching competencies. -Track my learnings and reflections throughout the workshop using the provided tools. -Document my implementation of new coaching techniques, including teacher feedback, to showcase the application of skills. -Share my reflections with the district leaders to highlight workshop impacts. My administrator will assess my instructional coaching effectiveness through: -Classroom walk-throughs to observe how teachers are implementing literacy approaches after working with me. -Review of my coaching cycle documentation and professional development artifacts. This will allow ongoing assessment of how enhancing my coaching skills through this workshop translates to improving teaching practices and student literacy outcomes. I welcome the opportunity to demonstrate and share my professional growth.
