Project Manager: Tara Remmes
School: Vinson-Owen
Type of Grant: Professional Development
Target Grade: 3
Curriculum: Literacy
Start Date: Summer 2026
As the district prioritizes literacy instruction and moves towards adopting a new literacy curriculum, our goal as educators is to continue to “deepen our toolkit of strategies” and to understand the research behind the best educational practices connected to reading/writing. For that reason, this grant proposal seeks funding for our third grade team (and professionals that support our reading instruction) to attend Landmark’s Institute’s 2 Day Intensive Cape Cod Seminar.
The district (along with The Collaborative for Educational Services) has
prioritized literacy instruction. While the district will be adopting a new curriculum, we are seeking to
understand more about the best literacy practices. While many of these will certainly be embedded in our new curriculum, we hope this PD will help us both understand these practices (and why certain new
pedagogical practices are important) and will also allow us to continue to think about how we may need to modify this new curriculum for our students with disabilities, specifically language based disabilities.
We feel that this grant truly addresses all of our grade 3 literacy standards.
This grant will provide our team with the dedicated time and professional instruction necessary to
master best instructional practices in literacy. We are particularly eager to engage in a comprehensive review of our new curriculum through the lens of specialized pedagogy, utilizing the expertise of Landmark School’s outreach professionals to refine our approach. By collaborating with these experts,
we intend to bridge the gap between general literacy standards and the intensive, evidence-based strategies required for students with language-based learning disabilities. This dual focus on curriculum exploration and expert-led mentorship will ensure that our instruction is not only aligned with current
research but also meticulously adopted to support our students’ unique profiles.
We will be attending seminars from 8:30-3 pm each day and learning from Landmark’s experts. We will also have time each evening to talk about how our learning connects to and begin putting this learning into practice with the district’s new literacy curriculum.
Landmark School is recognized internationally as a leader in the understanding and improving instruction for students with language-based learning disabilities.
Landmark School has also worked as a consultant with the Winchester Public Schools when it developed the Language Based Learning program (that is currently housed at VO and begins in 3rd grade).
