Following a competitive audition process, the Winchester High School Choir was selected as the featured choir for a Carnegie Hall performance. As part of this experience, students had the unique opportunity to participate in a Broadway workshop.
Skill cultivation: intense preparation, creative problem solving, and, research shows, improved cognitive abilities in math, language, and memory. The MA Arts Curriculum Framework emphasizes conceptual understanding, artistic processes (creating, performing, responding, connecting), and foundational music skills like music theory and composition.
The Broadway workshop will give students a unique opportunity to learn from professional actors and choreographers and apply what they learn to the music department and stage productions at Winchester High, including student-run programming, fundraising, filming, lighting, set production, and choreography. This will help strengthen student performances, benefitting the full school and community.
A Broadway workshop led by professional actors and choreographers will help students improve their musical and stage skills and learn about different career possibilities in the arts.
Inclusion: Typically, the students involved in a Carnegie Hall performance are selected from audition-only groups. For Winchester High, this opportunity, including the Broadway workshop, was offered to all WHS choir students. The Broadway workshop will bring together students from across four different choirs to collaborate, learn, and work together. They will then bring their new knowledge back to Winchester to share with future students and productions.
